How many months of bank statements should I provide?

For most visa categories, UKVI expects to see bank statements covering the last three to six months. For student visas, the funds must have been held for at least 28 consecutive days ending no more than 31 days before the application date. For visitor visas, three months of statements is usually sufficient. Always check the specific requirements for the visa category being applied for.

Can I provide financial support if I am not a UK citizen?

Yes. There is no requirement that the financial supporter must be a UK citizen. You can provide financial support regardless of your nationality, provided you have the financial means to do so and can provide evidence. If you are based outside the UK, your bank statements should still be from a recognised financial institution and ideally translated into English if in another language.

Does the money need to be in a UK bank account?

No, the funds do not need to be in a UK bank account. However, the bank statements must be from a regulated financial institution. If the statements are in a language other than English, a certified translation must be provided. UKVI may find it easier to verify funds held in well-known international banks.

Can more than one person provide financial support?

Yes, financial support can come from more than one source. Each supporter should provide their own letter and supporting financial evidence. The combined funds should meet the financial requirements for the visa category. UKVI will assess the overall financial picture.

What happens if my financial circumstances change after writing the letter?

If your financial circumstances change significantly before the visa decision is made, you should inform the applicant so they can update their application if necessary. UKVI assesses the financial evidence as at the date of application. If your circumstances change after the visa is granted, there is no legal obligation to notify UKVI, but you should ensure you can still honour your commitment to support the applicant.

Under the Immigration Rules, visa applicants must demonstrate adequate maintenance without recourse to public funds. For visitor visas, Appendix V (V 4.3) requires adequate funds. For student visas, Appendix Student specifies maintenance requirements (currently £1,334/month in London, £1,023/month outside London for 9 months). For family route applications, Appendix FM and Appendix FM-SE set out the minimum income requirement (£29,000 as of April 2024). Financial evidence must be from a regulated financial institution, held in cash funds, and available to the applicant. UKVI may verify financial documents with the issuing institution. Providing false financial information is an offence under section 26(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1971.
