Free Private Car Sale Receipt Template
A private car sale receipt, also known as a bill of sale, is a written record of a vehicle transaction between two private individuals.
Important Notes
Private vehicle sales in the UK are subject to general contract law and the Misrepresentation Act 1967. Unlike sales from traders, private sales are not covered by the Consumer Rights Act 2015 requirements for goods to be of satisfactory quality or fit for purpose. The principle of 'caveat emptor' (buyer beware) applies. However, the seller must not misrepresent the vehicle — for example, stating the mileage is genuine when it has been clocked is fraud under the Fraud Act 2006. The seller must notify the DVLA of the sale by sending the V5C registration certificate to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BD. The buyer must tax the vehicle before driving it (road tax does not transfer with the vehicle). Under the Road Vehicles (Registration and Licensing) Regulations 2002, the new keeper must be registered. If the vehicle is subject to outstanding finance, the sale may be void — the buyer should check with HPI or similar services.
